Art and Design

August 22, 2012

Art and Design can be seen as two disciplines that aim to not only achieve formal innovation of the spaces we live in and the objects we use, but also to change how we interact with and understand these spaces and objects. Beyond aesthetic experimentation and progress, a key component in the development of each discipline has been to not simply oscillate between the binary of form and function, but to create new spaces and aesthetic experiences that contribute to a new understanding of the world – either in respect to emotions, peoples, histories, the environment or the lived space around us. The panel then will ask how art and design can play a role in enhancing the way we come to understand and inhabit the world. How can aesthetics be called upon to create the next generation of spaces and places of human interaction, such as those responsive to the technologically saturated and environmentally sensitive world we live in today?
