Lisha Papert Lercari is the creator and director of Music and the Brain. MATB, a program started in 1997 by the 42nd Street Fund and given to schools on a grant basis, is currently being used in 125 NYC public schools, 25 schools around the USA as well as in France, Chile, Israel and Japan. The MATB curriculum, designed with 5-8 year olds in mind, teaches students to understand the elements of music, read music and play the piano. Studies conducted with Music and the Brain students showed statistically significant improvements in spatial temporal reasoning, math, spelling, acquiring English as a second language and attention, over students receiving no music training and students receiving a language arts program.
Lisha has been a music teacher since 1980. She spent 10 years teaching at the Harlem School of the Arts and 9 years at Hunter College High School. Her studies in music include an MA in Music Education and BA in Music Theory from the Manhattan School of Music, and three years in Paris with Nadia Boulanger.
